Research & Data

At Oxwillow, we conduct rigorous, independent research to help farms, businesses, and policymakers transition to sustainable, resilient, and nature-positive agricultural systems. Our work bridges the gap between science and practice, delivering real-world insights that support biodiversity, carbon reduction, and long-term productivity.

Service Overview

We specialise in applied research across the whole farm-to-fork supply chain, focusing on biodiversity net gain (BNG), natural capital, carbon auditing, regenerative farming and sustainable land management. Our research provides the evidence needed to inform decision-making, shape policy and support practical change on the ground.

We work closely with other farmers, landowners, food companies, public bodies and academic partners to design and deliver research that is credible, practical and impactful.

Oxwillow’s research is:

  • Applied and practical – grounded in real farming systems
  • Independent and evidence-based – trusted and objective
  • Collaborative – delivered with farmers, industry and academia
  • Supply chain focused – connecting farm-level action to corporate and policy needs
  • Action-oriented – supporting implementation, not just reporting

Our Research Focuses On:

Biodiversity Net Gain and habitat creation outcomes

Farm carbon auditing and emissions reduction pathways

Natural capital assessment and ecosystem service valuation

Sustainable and regenerative farming systems

Supply chain sustainability and environmental impact

Policy development and environmental scheme evaluation

Case Study:

Wet farming, new thinking...

Oxwillow is testing a new model for peatland farming - one that works with water, not against it.

In partnership with UKCEH and Fen Group, trials are exploring whether rewetted peat soils can deliver productive agriculture while reducing emissions and restoring ecosystems.

Early results, including the UK's first rice crop grown under these conditions, point to a more resilient and commercially viable future for peatland.
